available browsers

On the pool-computer are both graphical and text-based browsers available. The graphical browsers are in particular:

  • Iceweasel (Iceweasel Browser Stable-Release)
  • Epiphany (Epiphany Browser Stable-Release),
  • Konqueror (Konqueror Browser Stable-Release),
  • Galeon (Galeon Browser Stable-Release),
  • as well as Opera (Opera Browser)

The text-based browsers are in particular lynx and links.

Iceweasel sets up profiles / settings in ~/.mozilla. You can also find the cache-registries for every profile there. The same applies for opera (~/.opera).

Especially in connection with browser it might happen that the cache will be too big and the quota will be overblown. The same applies if the browser crashes and a core-file is docked. This memory image can often be several Megabyte in size.

You have to keep a special thing in mind with Iceweasel: the program create a rather large file named XUL.mfasl which might get also quite large. It is used to fasten the graphical interface and can be deleted with no risk. The so called XUL Cache can be disabled. To do so you have to open the program and enter about:config in the address-line and search for nglayout.debug.disable_xul_cache. This can be set true with a double click.

If you want to use own plugins for Mozilla/SeaMonkey/Firefox you can Install them using ~/.mozilla/plugins/ with Symlink (you might have to create the repository). The Java-plugin can be found in /usr/local/jdk1.6.0_01/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so.

For Iceweasel you can install extra language packages using firefox-browser.de but this will use some storage space.
